Fleece bedding is one of the most popular forms of bedding for guinea pigs, hedgehogs, and other small pets. One of the reasons many people are reluctant to use fleece bedding is because of the need to wash it. They may think they cannot get it clean and sanitary or that it will make their washing machine dirty, however, when done properly, fleece bedding can be a great option.
The first step to cleaning fleece is to make sure all solid waste, hay, and other particles are removed. I use a handheld broom and dustpan, as well has a handheld vacuum to get most of the mess off. Shaking it out outside can help make sure you get off the remaining dust and debris before it is washed.
As for the wash, I use mild detergent and vinegar (anti-bacterial). I use the “bulky/bedding” cycle of my washing machine since fleece bedding can be… well… bulky.
Sometimes, a few stray pieces of hay and hair end up sitting in the washer after a load. A simple solution is to vacuum out your washer after it is dry. It seems strange to vacuum out a washer, but it is a great solution to make sure your washer is clean before a load of clothes.
That’s it! It is that simple to have fresh, clean fleece. Leave any of your tips or questions in the comments!
